Jenks Pom Squad Garbs No. 200 for Jenks It was a crazy couple of days for head coach Kristin Phibbs and the member of the Jenks Pom team. From runner-up to champions, Jenks had a roller coaster ride at pom state that no one will soon forget. After rolling through the preliminaries of the large school competition with a score of 687.0, every team in the competition knew Jenks was the team to beat. This 2023 squad has been on a mission and coach Phibbs recognized it early in the season. “This year’s team lives and breathes cohesiveness and teamwork in every sense of the word. They are 100 percent supportive of one another and they put the success of their team before themselves. This coupled with their great work ethic has been the catalyst for this team’s success,” said Phibbs.
Being nearly 5 points better than second place after the prelims was huge for this team. Coach Phibbs said the consistency in the routines has been building. “They’ve been building and improving their consistency in execution every single day in practice for the last month leading up to this competition. Their consistency in execution and excitement for competing led me to have high expectations for successful results,” said Phibbs. In the finals Jenks was deducted 5 points which bumped them to second place. A finish to be proud of, but not what they expected. The OSSAA would contact coach Phibbs two days after the competition to confirm the deduction should not have been made and the Trojans were champions after all. What does his win mean for the program? “It means everything. We are excited to have been awarded the 6A Academic State Championship the past two years, but this is our first OSSAA Gameday State Championship since we first started competing three years ago. We wanted to win it for Jenks Pom and for Jenks Athletics. It is the 200th OSSAA state title for Jenks,” said Phibbs.
