5 Reasons the Trojan Boys Could Win 6A Golf – Presented by Woodland West Animal Hospital & Pet Resort

By BRAD HEATH

The year was 2004 and the Trojans finished the golf season on top with their sixth title in a row, dating back to 1999. The Trojans have yet to make their way back to the top of what is an extremely competitive Class 6A.

Last season, Norman North needed a playoff to defeat perennial powerhouse Edmond North. Both teams finished the state tournament with a score total of 923. The Trojans placed third overall with a final score of 932.

To win the Class 6A title this season, it will take three rounds of shooting in the low 300’s again this season. Here are five reasons why the Trojans could be the team to beat in the meat grinder that is Class 6A boys.

1. Age. The Trojans field a roster featuring one senior and possibly five juniors. More mature players will equal lower scores on day three. Older players have the experience of being on the course competing against themselves in high-pressure situations.

2. Sam Morris. As a sophomore Morris finished fourth overall at the state tournament last season with a collective score of 224. Rounds of 75, 75 and 74 were solid, but with room for improvement. Morris will take his game to the college level when he is done competing for the Trojans.

3. Coach Todd Kimrey. Setting his players up for success is more than talk for coach Kimrey. Knowing who fits where and being there to push when needed are a couple of reasons coach Kimrey is one of the best in the state.

“Our team will compete at a high level and look to make a strong showing at the state tournament this year,” said coach Kimrey.

4. Cale VanBrunt. Senior leadership is important and VanBrunt is the guy to give it. Capable of shooting in the low 70’s, VanBrunt will not only help the Trojans on the scorecard, but he will help the team find their identity while leaving his mark on the program.

5. Emerging Talent. New varsity additions such as Parker Fine (Jr.) will allow coach Kimrey to play with the lineup while developing the younger talent pool. Also look for Blake Bollenbach (Jr.), Jacob Cameron (Jr.), Connor Paul (So.), Cole Caperton (Jr.), and Carson Scrymgeour (So.) to have an impact this season.
