Jenks Trojan Golf
The term, “Jenks Lifer,” means the student-athlete came through the Jenks Public School system from kindergarten to high school. For Jenks golfer Sam Morris, that term has meaning beyond his legacy at Jenks High School. It also includes his father and grandmother.
“I am a Jenks Lifer just like my dad before me. My grandmother was also a teacher for 25 years at Jenks,” said Morris.
The hometown hero understands what it means to represent his school and his peers when he’s on the course competing for the Trojans.
“What it means to represent Jenks is to carry the tradition and legacy that others before us instilled. At Jenks you are expected to not only be the best in Tulsa but to be the best around the state. That’s the expectation,” said Morris.
Last season at the state competition, Morris finished his three rounds with a score of 225. His rounds of 74, 74, and 77 had him placing in a three-way tie for eighth. Morris was the top finisher for the Trojans, but he is quick to mention his teammates and who he expects to have solid seasons.
“I’m most excited about the group of guys we got coming back this year. We bring four of our starting five back from last year and I feel like we can build off those past experiences.
The group we have now is great and we all have known each other since elementary school so our team has great chemistry. Most of us have been playing on the same team with one another since seventh grade so we know how to get the best out of each other. With guys like Parker Fine, Carson Scrymgeour, Blake Bollenbach, and Connor Paul all coming back I think we can play good as individuals and if we can do that it would result in a good team result,” said Morris.
Morris grew up playing other sports like baseball, but in the ninth grade he made the decision to focus on golf. That decision is paying off and the amount of time he dedicates to getting better is staggering. With a future in golf at the college level, Morris said he wants to study business in college.
“I don’t really keep track of the number of hours I spend on the golf course but in the summers I’m usually practicing or playing from late in the morning to late in the evening,” said Morris.
In the classroom, Morris said his favorite subject is history, stating he enjoyed taking AP U.S. History last year. But learning about history is one thing, for Morris, making history is something he wants to do while at Jenks. “I enjoy representing Jenks while out playing in tournaments. I love competing for something more than just myself. I think we want to set an example for the younger guys coming up on what it takes to a great team but want we want most is to win a state title,” said Morris.
