Since the age of six, Jenks High School’s Kennedy Joiner has called the softball field her second home.
“I have been playing softball since I was six and this has always been my favorite sport. As I was growing up, I also played basketball and ran track. As I got older, I decided that softball was the best fit for me,” said Joiner.
Now a junior, Joiner said being a student-athlete at Jenks is unlike any other community.
“Jenks is a great place to be a student-athlete because I always feel welcome and it’s a great environment to have fun. The teams are always well supported by the community. The thing I have enjoyed the most about being on the softball team is the people I am around. This team is always welcoming, and we all get along. With great teamwork, we can have fun and grow as a team,” said Joiner.
Also a member of National Honor Society, STUCO, Drug Free Youth, Pre-Med Club and a volunteer with Special Olympics, Joiner said her work in the classroom is her focus and she loves her math classes.
“My favorite subject in school is math. Math has always taught me to be a problem solver and work through the hard problems. I have had a lot of amazing teachers but one teacher that stands out to me is Ms. Worth. She was my 5th grade teacher who really helped me out and taught me a lot,” said Joiner.
This season on the diamond, Joiner said the team has played really well and she’s made a lot of great memories with this group.
“So far, my favorite memory this year has been the softball lock-in! One thing I won’t forget is when my friends and I were sitting in the outfield talking and eating cake. Then sprinklers came on and started spraying us. We had to quickly get up and move our stuff but then we decided to just play around in the sprinklers,” said Joiner.
Quick to talk about her teammates, Joiner mentioned a few players everyone should know.
“A few teammates that have impressed me this season is Cali Worsham, she is an all around great player and has done a great job in the circle this year. Another player that has impressed me is McKenzie Cothran, she has done an amazing job at third base and has a great stick at the plate. Lastly is Payton Koch who as a freshman has done an amazing job when she has had to step up and pitch in varsity games when we need her,” said Joiner.
Joiner said the leadership, teamwork and their willingness to work hard is what she loves about this team the most.
One day Joiner said she would like to attend college and pursue a degree in medicine.
