High school athletes invest a lot so that they can be their best. While they know that the work is important, there are times when they just do not feel like working or doing what needs to be done. Sofia Ohlson says that when those days come around, she keeps her mind focused on what she needs to focus on.
“Currently, my biggest motivator is preparing for my upcoming tennis season,” she said. “It is my last high school tennis season so I want to finish strong.”
Ohlson is a senior at Jenks, where she is a member of the tennis team. She is also involved in several clubs including, the National Honor Society, Pre-med Society, Chinese club, and Science National Honor Society. Outside of school, she is also a member of the Tucker Tennis Academy, which she says has been a key part of her improvement on the tennis court.
“TTA has helped my game in so many ways,” Ohlson said. “All of the coaches are passionate about improving junior players’ games. Being able to work with so many amazing coaches has allowed me to strengthen my game over the years.”
Sofia says that it takes a lot of work in order to be a successful tennis player but she has seen that work pay off.
“In order to be successful in tennis, it has taken a lot of patience and practice,” she said. “Just being consistent in practicing has helped me improve. The highlight moment of my career was definitely winning state in my junior year. My partner and I won line two doubles, and Jenks placed third as a team. It was an amazing experience and being on both podiums, individual and team, was a unique experience.”
Throughout her career, Ohlson has had a few people that have been key to her growth as a person and an athlete.
“My parents are my biggest role models,” she said. “My dad played college tennis so my love for the sport came from him. Both of my parents work extremely hard to achieve their goals and that has had a positive influence on my life. My twin brother is on the boys’ Jenks tennis team. It is funny to work against him in practice because we bring our sibling rivalry onto the court.”
