Jenks High School junior Teylor Hedges approaches softball with a blend of toughness, preparation and appreciation for the people alongside her.
A third baseman, Hedges plays one of the infield’s most demanding positions. The reaction time is short, and each play requires focus.
“I am a third baseman and the most difficult thing about playing third is that the ball comes 10 times harder, so you always have to be ready for it no matter what.”
Her older sister, Paiton Hedges, has been an important source of that mindset. Teylor said her sister’s steady encouragement helps her work through difficult moments.
“My sister Paiton Hedges inspires me the most because she always encourages me to be the best version of myself and to stay strong and push through all the hard times in life.”
At the plate, Hedges keeps her approach simple: look for a pitch she can handle and stay ready. She also brings a sense of humor to the routine.
“My process at the plate is I think about the pitch I am looking for and hope they don’t throw me a changeup… lol”
Hedges values the relationships that make playing softball meaningful. She said teammates provide support during difficult stretches, while their different personalities keep the group connected.
“I love the most about my team and teammates is that they will always be by your side to cheer you up when you are down on yourself. Tempe is the most vocal on and off the field and Hannah definitely keeps everyone laughing.”
She also remembers the example set by former teammate Jordyn Cook, who helped her adjust as a freshman playing next to an experienced shortstop.
“Jordyn Cook has left the biggest impression on me because when I was a freshman, and she was a Senior she was our Shortstop while I was at third and she helped keep me confident and relaxed on the field.”
Away from softball, Hedges enjoys shopping, swimming and spending time with friends. She is involved in multiple school clubs, enjoys math and still considers second-grade teacher Mrs. Overton her favorite teacher.
