For Jenks High School sophomore Jude Thornburg, softball is more than a sport. It is a source of discipline, a way to build lasting connections and a shared family experience that has shaped her love for the game.
Thornburg, a catcher, draws inspiration from the people who have supported her throughout her softball journey.
“My family inspires me with their unwavering sideline support, the shared time that softball gives us together traveling, the sacrifices they make for me to play, and showing unconditional love.”
That support has helped Thornburg embrace the demanding responsibilities of catching. Positioned behind the plate, she must stay engaged through every pitch while managing the physical strain and quick decisions required of the position.
“I’m a catcher, and I think the most difficult thing is the physical and mental endurance needed for the position. Every play involves deep squats, sudden blocking, and split-second throws and decisions.”
Her role also comes with a strong sense of responsibility. Thornburg believes one of softball’s most important unwritten rules is taking care of the person directly behind her.
“As a catcher, the most important unwritten rule is to always protect the umpire.”
At the plate, Thornburg keeps her approach simple. She focuses on seeing the ball clearly and hitting it with purpose, while also following a personal pre-at-bat routine.

“When I’m at the plate I think to see it and drive it. I also have a super superstition that I have to spin the bat and tap twice in front of home plate.”
Thornburg values the relationships formed with her teammates as much as the competition itself. She enjoys being part of a group that offers support through both successful and difficult moments.
“Being able to lift others up when they aren’t having the best day and also receiving the same in return.”
Two teammates have made impressions on Thornburg. Addison Burrows brings energy and humor to the group, while Kynder Stimson stands out through her encouraging attitude.
“Addison Burrows always makes me laugh because she’s real and has an uplifting spirit. Kynder Stimson because she also stays positive and encouraging of others.”
Away from softball, Thornburg enjoys an active lifestyle. She spends time fishing, hiking, reading and playing other sports. Traveling is another favorite, especially annual trips with her family to Colorado. Closer to home, she enjoys spending time at an area in her neighborhood known as the Echo, where local kids gather to play and socialize.
In school, science is her favorite subject, and she credits Kim Reschick as an important influence in her early development as an athlete.
“Kim Reschick because she supported me early in my softball career, still supports me today, taught me so much, and always believed in me.”
Thornburg is also involved with Drug Free Youth, Student Council and Project Unify. Through softball, she has learned lessons that reach beyond the field.
“Softball has taught me to be consistent, always on time, to make healthy choices for myself, and to be mentally tough.”
