OUTLOOK
There are many reasons for the optimism surrounding the Lady Trojans this season. One is the return of Hazel Ifeoma (6-0, Jr.) in the post. A VYPE Top 100 selectee, Ifeoma averaged 13.3 points a game with 8.7 rebounds and 1.3 blocked shots per contest as a sophomore.
“Hazel is a strong post player who has a variety of moves in the paint. She is capable of taking defenders off the bounce as well as playing with her back to the basket. Additionally, she can step out and hit the long range on occasion. She is very athletic and has good feet on defense, capable of guarding a variety of positions on the floor. Finally, she is a vocal leader, constantly encouraging teammates and talking on the floor,” said coach Combs.
With a good mix of returning starters and young players developing within the program, the Lady Trojans should find their identity and compete with every opponent.
“We look forward to improving on last year’s record and seeing continuous growth throughout the year. We should be competitive in every game this year and may surprise some people,” said coach Combs.
Jayda Sykes (5-9, Jr.) averaged 10 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists last season while Jaedyn Jones (5-8, Jr.) accounted for 8.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game. Their production accounts for nearly 20 points, and 8.0 rebounds a game. Their importance to the team cannot be understated. Also look for Aubrey Odom (5-10, So.) at forward who added 4.3 points and 4.0 rebounds as a freshman last year.
Incoming freshman Janiya Jones (5-3) is turning heads with her athleticism and explosiveness off the dribble. Also a great defender, Jones is proving she can compete with the best at the varsity level.
Other players to watch include Riley Kirkendoll (5-9, Fr.), Addie Van Gilder (5-6, Sr.), Breyonna Wolfe (5-6, Jr.), and Alexis Wolfe (5-4, Fr.). Last season Van Gilder averaged 2.7 points per game for Jenks.
