Following the advice that “pressure is a privilege” helped push Carrington Hessen to the top of her game. It takes special dedication and talent to compete and excel in three athletic disciplines. Carrington, a senior at Jenks High School, competed at state tournaments in tennis, cross country, and track.
“Going to state for cross country was very fun, we were a top contender going into the race and the race environment was like nothing I have ever been a part of. We ended up placing third which was a huge jump up from last year,” she said.
Carrington is committed to the University of Nebraska to run track and cross country. “I am passionate about track because of the people and because of our team. I like knowing that I’m not just competing for myself, but I am also competing for our team as a whole,” she said.
Competing at state for tennis is always fun but very tense at times she says. Carrington won state individually her sophomore year and placed second last year. She recalls how fun it was to win as a team last year.
“My biggest stand out achievement through high school sports,” she says, “is my sophomore year, winning state individually and not losing a match all season.”
“Jesus inspires me. Whenever I start to get nervous or anxious before a big race or tennis match, I just give it to him because I know he has a plan for my life. 1 Peter 5:7 says ‘overthinking will kill your peace. Pray and leave it to God.’ I like this verse because it helps me remain calm when playing or running. It reminds me that God has a plan for my life and that I don’t need to worry,” she said.
By playing multiple sports Carrington has learned to enjoy the sport she is playing. Each is valuable but the people are the best part of her sports. From running with an amazing group of girls, to getting to know them and competing together, Carrington enjoys seeing the talent in her teammates.
