Jenks High School junior Landry Fieker has played soccer for 13 years and is a member of the varsity soccer team. Being a student-athlete at Jenks is special for Fieker.
“The thing I love the most about being a student-athlete at Jenks is the people. I love going to school and practice every day and being surrounded by my amazing friends, teammates, and coaches. Especially soccer, even if I had a bad day at school, I know I can look forward to practice each day. I’m proud to be a part of something so awesome and special at Jenks,” said Fieker.
The goal for the soccer team is the same this season as every season; win a state title. Fieker said her teammates are focused and ready for the tough season ahead.
“The thing I love most about my teammates are the way we both push and encourage each other every time we step on the field. When things get tough, we all know we can rely on our teammates to build us up!! Focusing on one clear cut goal any time we’re in between those white lines,” said Fieker. “The team is coming together smoothly. Right now, we’re focusing on pushing ourselves and practicing as hard as possible each day. With that, comes the chemistry. Much chemistry and trust are already established, as a lot of us play on club teams together, so we know how to play with each other. With each practice, I’m getting more and more excited and confident about us this season.”
Fieker, like many of her teammates, has worked on her game to help the team win.
“My ability to both not be afraid to make a mistake, and to get past mistakes during a game, is the part of my game that I feel is most improved from the past. I call it my “next play mentality.” With the help of some of my coaches, coach Gross (Jenks head coach), coach John Michael, and coach Jesse, I’ve been able to buy into this mindset,” said Fieker. “I still struggle with it at times, but it’s the concept of not getting too down on myself after making a mistake. If I’m not making mistakes, I’m not trying hard enough! Whenever I make a mistake, I must think to myself “next play, next play, next play!” And focus on moving forward, what the game needs, and what the team needs from me in that moment instead of dwelling on the last mistake.”
Soccer is not the only thing Fieker is involved in. Fieker is a member of STUCO, drug free youth, and National Honor Society. In the classroom, Fieker said her favorite subject in high school is something she will pursue in college.
“My favorite subject in school would have to be science because I enjoy learning how the world works, and why things are how they are. For example, the ocean. There is always more to learn about the ocean because so much of it is unexplored. It’s like a whole new world underneath the surface. That’s why I’m planning to major in marine science in college. I would never run out of new things to research,” said Fieker. “My favorite teacher is Mr. Engle. He was my sophomore year AP World History teacher, and I was really able to hit my stride in his class. He taught like he truly wanted his students to succeed and retain the information, and I was able to build great study habits and learning skills in that class. It was by far my favorite class I can remember having. I plan on taking Mr. Engle’s AP Economics class next year for senior year. After I graduate, I am going to attend college and play D1 soccer at the University of South Carolina. I plan to major in Marine Science. Right now, I am focusing on enjoying this season of my life while preparing for the next.”
In her free time, Fieker said she enjoys being around family and friends.
“I enjoy spending time with family, mainly my sisters, Ramsey and Gentry, going to the fields for some solo training, hanging with friends, whether it be spending time at each other’s houses, watching movies, or going to eat, and making lots of rest my priority for when I have days off,” said Fieker.
