McKenzie Cothran is a softball player at Jenks High School. She loves to be out on the softball field, whether it is practice or game day. Cothran says that while she has made a lot of memories during her time playing, there is one accomplishment that stands out as her favorite.
“The highlight moment in my career so far is receiving All-District third baseman for Class 6A,” she stated. “ I have always dreamed of getting it when I was in high school and I was very happy when I heard that I got it and the work I put in was paying off.”
Becoming the player she is today has taken a lot of hard work from McKenzie, who is a senior. And while there are days that come along when she just does not feel like working, she says that there is a drive that helps her stay focused.
“What motivates me is the joy I have when I get to play with the people I love to play with and having fun while playing the sport that I have loved for a while,” she said. “Also, my parents are big role models for me. They have always been there and helped me when I needed it.”
There are many teams that Cothran and her teammates face during the season, but she says that there is one team that she always enjoys competing against.
“It is always a really big game when we play against Broken Arrow,” McKenzie said. “The games really do go back and forth and the rivalry is always a lot of fun.”
Every member of her team does their part to help the team be successful, but she has a few that have helped her become a better player.
“Our catcher, Paiton Hedges, and our first baseman, Aubree Vickrey, always do drills with me and we always push ourselves to our best. I believe the catcher is the most unappreciated position because I know from experience that all that gear is a lot to work in and you’re the eyes of the field. The catcher has a lot of responsibilities.”
