5 Keys to Winning a State Title
As the 2023 season approaches, the excitement levels grow as true contenders for a state title learn more about themselves in non-district games and start to turn some focus to their opponents entering district play.
So, who are the contenders in Class 6A-I? We’re really talking about three teams. Bixby, Union, and Jenks. Does Owasso have an outside chance? Of course, they do. But the odds-on favorites are the Spartans, Redhawks, and Trojans.
What do the Trojans need to do to win the title? Here are the five things the Trojans need to do to reclaim Class 6A-I.
5 – Dominate your district. Mustang, Broken Arrow and even Westmoore all believe they can play with the Trojans. If last season is any indication, maybe they can. But the Trojans must dominate district play and beat Bixby, again, when they square off on Nov. 3 rd for a district title.
4 – When in doubt, air it out. In passing league play the Trojans have dominated opponents with the short and long passing games. I know passing league play is one thing, but the emergence of AC Christiansen and Conner Thompson as legit targets is big for the offense.
3 – Run it down their throat until they stop it. Not that the Trojans need to grind out games, but with the addition of KD Jones to the backfield, Jenks has an explosive player who can take any carry to the house. The offensive line can move the line of scrimmage giving Jones the opportunity to do what he does best.
2 – Do I need to say, stay healthy? Well, it’s a must. The Trojans can’t afford to lose players on defense. They have a secondary with depth issues and will likely see starters from offense playing corner on defense.
1 – Don’t let teams hang around. Last season the Trojans had seven games decided by one possession or less. This season look for Jenks to step on the gas and not let up.
Obviously, there are more than 5 keys to win a state title. Coach Riggs and his staff have everything under control. The confidence in the coaching staff is off the charts and the players are eager to take the field and prove what they can accomplish.
