It may not have been pretty, but the No. 3-ranked Jenks Trojans left Allan Trimble Stadium on Friday night with a 55-28 win over the visiting Enid Plainsmen (2-2, 0-1) to open up district play. Keith Riggs’ team improves to 3-1 (1-0) on the year on the back of a stellar fourth quarter from the Trojans.
Jenks went into the locker room at halftime with a 28-7 lead thanks to three total touchdowns from quarterback Ike Owens. But coming out for the second half, Enid came ready to mount a comeback. Twenty-one straight points for the Plainsmen led to a 28-21 score in favor of the Trojans heading into the final frame.
With the Trojans needing a play in the worst kind of way to stop the bleeding, Owens hit junior tight end Khyler Beaty for a 27-yard TD to bring it back to a two-score lead. The next drive for Enid quickly ended thanks to an interception by Cooper Crissup followed by a six-yard TD pass from Owens to Jordan Schelling.
Another interception on Enid’s next drive was turned into six points by Jalyn Stanford, and before Enid even knew what hit them a one-score game ballooned back into a 48-21 lead for the men in maroon. Sophomore Boston Carrasco added a 14-yard score to push the Trojans point total to 55, the first time in two years that they have scored over 50 points in a game according to Jenks radio play-by-play man Don King.
“They really outplayed us in the third quarter and even some in the fourth,” Riggs said postgame. “We were really able to take advantage of some opportunities to get out ahead of them. We’ve got a lot of work to do, but I do appreciate our kids responding in the fourth quarter.”
The Trojans ended the game with 330 yards on the ground, most of those coming from Stanford, Schelling and Jaiden Carroll who returned to the team after a two-game absence. Owens was undoubtedly the MVP of the game, totaling five touchdowns, three in the air and two on the ground.
Jenks will travel to the OKC area to battle Westmoore (2-2, 1-0) this Friday night. Westmoore beat Moore 27-17 in their first district game of the season.
