The Jenks Trojans are 2-1 heading into district play off a much-needed bye week last week. With three games in the books for Keith Riggs’ squad, let’s take a moment to look back at the Trojans’ first three games of the 2022 season and how they got to where they are right now.
Week 1 – 13-10 Win At Edmond Santa Fe
Starting the season ranked No. 1 in 6AI, the Trojans rolled into Edmond and handed the Wolves a loss in the opening game. The Trojans made it closer than what they felt it needed to be, with Riggs telling the Tulsa World that it was, “The perfect definition of an ugly win.”
Running back Jaiden Carroll received a questionable personal foul and was subsequently ejected late in the first half of the game, proving to be a big blow for an offense that could only muster 239 total yards. However, the defense stepped up in a big way, holding the Wolves to only 181 yards of offense and scored on a pick six to put the game away for the boys in maroon.
Week 2 – 14-7 Win Vs. Owasso
The Trojans returned to Allan Trimble Stadium in week two to welcome in the Owasso Rams who were coming off of a drubbing handed to them by the Bixby Spartans in the previous week. Much like the previous week, it wasn’t the Trojans offense, but instead their defense that carried them to victory.
Owasso was unable to score an offensive touchdown with their only points coming off of a blocked punt returned for a score in the second quarter. Jenks quarterback Ike Owens found Ayden Christiansen for a 27-yard TD, but the player of the game was sophomore running back Jordan Schelling.
Schelling, filling in for the still-suspended Jaiden Carroll, carried the ball 20 times for 129 yards and a TD. With three of Jenks’ five starting offensive lineman missing the game for various reasons, Schelling shined bright in a Trojans victory.
Week 3 – 38-3 Loss Vs. Union
The MidFirst Bank Backyard Bowl went to the rival Union Redhawks in front of 10,000 fans. Jenks’ three-game win streak over Union was snapped as well as their 13-game win streak overall.
The Trojans jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but couldn’t handle Union and their young quarterback Shaker Reisig–a Jenks transfer–from scoring 38 unanswered points. The Trojans were without 10 starters in this game and were handled convincingly on both sides of the ball.
Keith Riggs and company will look to shake themselves off after a week of rest and welcome in Enid (2-1) on Friday night for the first game of district play at Allan Trimble Stadium.
